Luckhardt and Maze Ltd. in 2005.

Optometrists are the major providers of primary eye care in the United States.  85% of all Americans seek optometric care when selecting an eye health care professional.  Education can include a four-year pre-medical undergraduate education, earning a Bachelor of Visual science degree, and four years of optometric education, earning the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree.

The doctor of optometry is a primary health care provider who examines, evaluates, diagnoses, manages and treats conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system.  When appropriate an optometrist will refer patients to and co-manage with other primary, secondary and tertiary health care specialties (i.e. internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology and its sub-specialties etc.).  Wen accordance with state law optometrists prescribe, fit and dispense visual therapy programs, eye wear, and contact lenses, providing comprehensive vision and eye health care for all ages--infancy through senior-aged adults.

An optometrist is the doctor of choice for routine eye health care and vision examinations.  An ophthalmologist is an eye surgeon.  Most surgeons specialize in a particular area of the eye.  Today's modern optometrist has cornea specialists, cataract specialists, retinal specialists, glaucoma specialists and oculo-plastic surgeons on his/her eye healthcare team.  Patient co-management between the optometrists and the appropriate specialist is customary to provide excellence in eye health care for their patients.
